Tonight is opening night for the Winter Revels, and I'd be even more excited than I am if I wasn't so exhausted. Between my regular work during the day and 8-hour rehearsals afterwards every night, I've been doing 16+ hour days. There's barely been time to come home, unwind and decompress with my Lovely Housemate who is also in the show, wake up my wife so we can actually see each other a bit, finish any remaining writing work I have to do, and get a few hours of sleep before starting it all again the next day. Thankfully, as a holiday show, it's a very short run (6 shows), so I only have to keep this pace up through Sunday. I found out that a lot of the folks in the company take this week off from work, but that's not a good option for me, so, head down and push on through!

The show is going to be fantastic -- a few days ago I was worried, but it's really been coming together during this last week of tech and dress rehearsals, and aside from a little tightening needed here and there, and a few small glitches with lighting, etc (and a missed entrance by the Ukrainian men's dance troupe (which we filled seamlessly, but still...) , it was a pretty darn good run-through last night. Baba Yaga, in particular, is wonderful -- a stilt-walker carrying around a house, complete with chicken feet ;> The music is just stunning, and I very much hope we end up taking this one to the studio after the show to cut an album, as seems fairly likely, if the financial/business folks can get it all arranged. And I haven't talked much about it, but the venue is amazing -- a very sharp 900-seat auditorium with good acoustics, an excellent technical crew, and a very nice sound and lighting setup (true theatre geeks can check out the specs here). Several of the shows are sold-out, and even with no last-minute tickets, it looks like we already have less than 500 unsold seats over the course of the run, and ~5000 $20 seats over four days in a rural area is pretty darn good.

Patty, our resident Georgian expert, came up with two new hats for me from her collection. The first is a lovely, elegant grey and black felt number, very sharp and a perfect fit for the costume. The second is....well, apparently excruciatingly culturally correct for the Caucasus, and it looks a bit like the wig from the movie Amadeus (if you've seen the movie, you'll know what I mean), or, alternately, like someone hollowed out a sheep and made it into a hat. It's rather totally over the top, and I have to admit, I love it. I decided to wear it only during the two big raucous dance pieces, though, because honestly, that hat bobbing around on my head during quieter moments risks upstaging whatever else is happening on stage ;> I'll post pics if I get a chance.

Hey, hon! Big hug to you and all of your co-performers. I'll be thinking about you! I really gave serious thought to trying to make it up there for it this year, but couldn't make it happen. I hope this year's experience is a great one for you and everyone else, so you'll do it again, and I can try to attend next year! :)

Well, I'll certainly miss seeing ya, but I'll see about getting you a DVD. Not the same as being there, of course, but at least you'll get to hear the music and see the show! Despite the somewhat grueling schedule, this has been a great experience, and it's a really tremendous cast and crew. I think I'm hooked -- if the company wants me back, I'll probably keep working with them.

This is incredibly exciting! My little Eastern European heart wants to see it so badly! If I weren't so far away, I'd hop in my chicken-legged house and be there in an instant.

Break a leg! And definitely post pics of the hat!
