I haven't been posting much recently, largely because life has been hugely busy, overflowing with mostly good things, including a website/magazine launch, freelance work, house demolitions/renovations, family and friends visiting for the last month or so, and getting ready to head out of town, and go teach over the next couple of weeks. In other words, the frenetic but bountiful summer harvest. All good, and then comes the time to enjoy and store away the harvest, turn inwards and rest, contemplate, prepare for next year. But for now, the harvests are coming fast and furious -- I'm not ready for Winter yet, but I can feel the season turning, towards Autumn. Yum.

Fond wishes to you all, and I'll look forward to catching up on the backside in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I'll share a couple of miscellaneous things.

A good and thought-provoking piece from the Guardian with the premise that the supposed "fundamentalism" of religious literalism is in some ways a thoroughly modern phenomenon:

Unholy strictures (subhed: Karen Armstrong It is both wrong and dangerous to believe that literal truth can be found in religious texts)

A moving article on the tragedy of the genocide in Darfur, seen as a symptom of the increasingly desperate oil/resource wars, and its connection to big oil: Tomgram: David Morse on Darfur as a Resource War

Speaking of oil, I cen't remember if I posted this before, but there's an enormous amount of excellent Peak Oil-related information here: Post Carbon Institute. This is a good place to get books, information, and refer friends who are curious about the topic.

And lastly, the lyrics to a good ol' Pete Seeger song that I'm learning. Seems appropriate for the times. Goes along with the necessary sentiment that indeed, indeed. we are the ones we have been waiting for.

THE EMPEROR IS NAKED TODAY-O!

As the sun
Rose on the rim of eastern sky
And this one
World that we love was trying to die
We said stand!
And sing out for a great hooray-o!
Your child may be the one to exclaim
The emperor is naked today-o!

Four winds that blow
Four thousand tongues, with the word: survive
Four billion souls
Striving today to stay alive
We say stand!
And sing out for a great hooray-o!
Why don't we be the ones to exclaim
The emperor is naked today-o!

Men - have failed
Power has failed, with papered gold.
Shalom - salaam
Will yet be a word where slaves were sold
We say stand!
And sing out for a great hooray-o!
We yet may find the way to exclaim
The emperor is naked today-o!
