weird worldly metaphors
Jul. 14th, 2005 02:40 pmSubmitted for your approval, a brief rural scene: I'm walking back down my road after having checked the mail, a mixed pile of mail under one arm, taking an occasional sip from a small snifter in the other hand containing a very wee dram of a lovely vigorous XO Armagnac that I keep around for special occasions (I just turned in some copy on deadline that I'm quite happy with), and I stop and nibble on the first luscious ripe wild raspberries of summer, growing by the side of the road (yummmm!), when I notice a persistent horsefly buzzing around my head incessantly (that induces me to swat at it with my handful of mail), and then I hear the first rumble-booms of an approaching thunderstorm, and a few drops of scattered rain drift across the road and I and into my glass and onto the mail, unfortunately not deterring the horsefly.
Somehow, the snapshot of this whole vista or tableau (walking, mail/society/messages, rare pleasures of civilisation/Armagnac, raspberries/natural bounty, horsefly & thunderstorm/untamed and/or unruly nature, etc) all just somehow perfectly summed up that moment in my life. So I sit here at my desk, read the mail, sip the precious remainder of the Armangac, pick raspberry seeds from between my teeth, listen to the storm pass and wonder if the horsefly will be back again when I go out to chop wood tomorrow, and contemplate the symbolism inherent in each and every moment.
[Edit: coolness -- my partner just got home and told me that she saw a big black bear cross the road onto our property this morning on her way to work about 6am, and we had a porcupine cross our drive as we came in last night about midnight from seeing the latest Star Wars movie...big-time stinkeroo, BTW, er, the movie, not the porcupine]
