Another good peak oil article, this time from the Austin Chronicle, explaining concisely why our current society is going to dramatically transform, and what some of the consequences will be: Letters at 3AM. One good point that the writer makes is that rebuilding the nation's rail infrastructure, currently at third-world levels, will be key, because rail is a much more efficient way to move goods and people than cars or airplanes, once oil prices go up.

And a less concise, but well-written piece from the Earth Policy Institute about why Farmer's Markets, and local, non-factory farming methods, are so important: Oil and Food: A Rising Security Challenge. Zero-till farming is the wave of the future, indeed, only sustainable farming methods of food production will be viable when petrochemical (and fertilizer) prices spike. Supporting local, organic, sustainable-method farmers and direct-from-farmer food distribution methods now not only means healthier food on your plate, it also means having more food available locally to you when oil prices go through the roof and the oil-based factory-farm system collapses. Make friends with farmers, ranchers and dairy operators. They're good folks, and they do something important that most of us have no idea how to do for ourselves anymore -- grow food.
