happy things list meme
May. 11th, 2005 11:34 amHere's a meme for ya to try if you like:
Make a list of ten things you've done or will do in your life between a week ago and a week from now, that made/make you happy. One twist -- these should all be non-typical things, something different or unusual in your life. So for instance, I wouldn't put in "spend time with my son," even though that's one of the things I enjoy most, though I could put in, "teach my son how to plant trees," if that's something new that we haven't done before. Capisca? You may find it's been a far more interesting two weeks than you'd thought, or you may find you want to make time to do more unusual things in yer life ;>
Here's mine:
1. With my son sitting in my lap and the MP3s playing on my laptop, sang through the first two movements (Requium and Kyrie) of Mozart's Requium Mass, one of my favorite pieces of music and something I haven't performed for about 20 years -- there are still at least a few of those brain cells from that era left, it seems...
2. cooked Mother's Day brunch for my mother and my partner (and son, housemates, and a visiting friend) on Sunday, including from-scratch Belgian waffles, local maple syrup made by someone I know, homemade vanilla & maple syrup whipped cream, some amazing cheeses (both local and not), turkey bacon, local rosemary-herb and apple chicken sausages, fresh raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, orange-pomegranate mimosas, and of course, lots of good coffee, with decorations of flowers and budding tree branches from our garden. I don't think I've ever had a Mother's Day with my mother and my partner (since she became a mother) together before, ever.
3. am in the process of planting 125 bare-root seedlings (ash, rowan, hawthorne, oak, holly, sugar maple, walnut, hazelnut, some wetlands plants and some winter-food shrubs for the birds) I got from the state nursery.
4. submitted a proposal for a new website/online magazine that, if it goes through, I'll be editing/producing (Edit: just got news it's a "go").
5. will be buying a new, extremely butch Husqvarna chainsaw, for chopping up this season's deadfall trees (some quite large) that I'll be using to feed the wood furnace I'm installing in the summer, as well as being beefy enough to work in a chainsaw mill I'm planning to build in the next year or so, so I can start to mill my own posts, timbers and boards. The old chainsaw just does not remotely pack the gear for this kind of work.
6. along with one of my Lovely Housemates, removed fallen limbs and branches, mucked out and deepened the channel for one of the smaller seasonal streams that was getting quite swampy (and drowning the roots of some of the nearby trees). Since the bugs aren't really out in force yet, it was a couple of hours of great fun playing in the gooky mud...bloop!
7. got to hang out and have long, deep chats far into the night with a visiting dear old friend and colleague/mentor, the closest person I have to a sister, who will be moving up with us sometime during the next couple of months. This is a person who has been in the last couple of years through some very severe health issues, the sudden and early death of her partner, and other life-wrenching experiences, but who still manages to keep moving forward with an enormous love of life and force of will -- inspirational.
8. will get a visit (starting today!) from two lovely friends from out of town who I am very much looking forward to seeing and spending time with
9. house renovations: finished installing wood flooring in the kitchen and dining room, then starting on the living room, also found cheap deals online and ordered a glass vessel sink bowl with nifty spiral/pentagonal design and a antique-style copper faucet to replace the grotty stuff now in the hall bathroom, and some cool forge-work drawer pulls.
10. As an early Mother's Day giftie, took my partner out to a wine tasting/dinner at a nearby restaurant and had a fantastic incredible 6-course meal and an equal number of really excellent wines from Acorn Winery, along with some delightful jazz guitar. Yum. Got to meet the Acorn Winery owners and talk wine stuff -- it turns out they own the vineyard (Alegria) which produces the grapes used by another winery (Rosenblum) in one of my favorite Zinfandels. We definitely need to get out more often, budget allowing ;>
Well, gosh, that was a far busier and more eventful week than I'd thought it was....
