On this auspicious day (ding, dong, the 8-year reign of idiocy is over), I am very pleased to report that the blood tests and ultrasounds came out perfectly normal, so much so that no amnio is needed after all (insert big sigh of relief),'s a boy! The pictures leave, er, no doubt. F will be thrilled, he really wanted a little brother (who will, no doubt, idolize him).

So now we need to start thinking of boy's names. Given the new puppy in the house, I can't help but think of Sean Connery in the third Indiana Jones movie: "We named the *dog* Griffin..." "The DOG?"

hee hee. C didn't think that was so funny.

That sounds wonderful! No extra hazardous tests when you don't need them. Hope this news makes it easier to relax and enjoy the months ahead!

And a boy! That will be so much fun for Forest....and for all of you of course.
Good thing I didn't send the dresses! Newborn is quite young to start with drag ;-)

Thanks, and yes, it's a big relief -- even if the chance of a serious (miscarriage-inducing) problem is 1 in 400, that's a small but real chance that we could have that happen with an otherwise perfectly healthy baby. The amnio appointment was scheduled for right after the ultrasound if we'd decided to go ahead with it. Divination seemed to say "let what is in the dark stay in the dark, don't pierce the veil," but we were waiting for all of the test results, including today's ultrasound, before finally deciding, and I'm glad we did as we did.

And as a brief ramble, it's funny -- until at least sometime in the later 1800s (industrial age), all boy and girl babies, once they outgrew swaddling clothes and for the first few years at least, tended to wear what were basically dresses or smocks, none of this sex-typed clothing modern society seems to be so concerned about.

Here is a link to a very elaborate boy's dress from the 1850s (, in the Henry Ford museum. Hard to imagine that being seen as acceptable today, even though our views about gender are supposedly so much more "enlightened."

I mean about the baby. Not necessarily the dress. ;-)

That is a really cute dress! But not for kids :-). Yep those were the ages that children were dressed as mini adults and treated want to play....NO, sit down!

As a girl (and a girl's mother) I am thankful for this age in which we women are not restricted to just dresses and skirts anymore!

:) Baby's about 8 oz or so right now, and growing every day. Quite a mover, too, which is normal at this age, but it was so cool to see him doing his little calisthenics!

WOOO-HOOOO! That is wonderful news, I'm glad that the amnio is not needed...that seemed scary.

Thanks very much! Me, too, it's nice not to have to worry about that, even if statistically it's supposed to be pretty darn safe. This kid is already a statistical rarity, so I'm not sure that statistics are much use in this situation... ;>

C says that luckily for me, she is quite fond of the men in my family ;> There's a part of me that's a little wistful about not having the experience of raising a daughter (unless we adopt, I suppose), but raising F has been such an amazing and wonderful experience, and I am thrilled that he's going to have a brother and a sibling, something neither C nor I experienced.

heh. that's awesome, but you really deserved a daughter. ;-)

the boys will adore each other.

Heh -- you may be right, on both counts.

Also, I can't help noticing that Roth's little girl will be almost our boy's age. Now *there's* a scary thought. I also have visions of Roth coming to track down my son for compromising his daughter's virtue....(or vice versa, after all, she'll be the older, more experienced woman ;>)

As your sons journey on to days we'll never know, their names; those from you, those they give each other, those the trees on your hill remember and retell, will be what I know as the finest gifts you've given to the world.
