local is good, and other fun

Yesterday after work a bunch of us went over to Flavors of the Valley, an annual event sponsored by our Coop which highlights local farmers, localvore restaurants, dairies, and so on. The site was packed, and in the midst of eating lots of yummy samples (and bringing home some great blackcurrant preserves and infused maple syrup, cheese, etc), I found out that there are at least three new farms with CSAs considering doing weekly drops in our town. I am really liking the speed at which the local agricultural community and localvore movement is picking up momentum, and how diverse and healthy it seems -- nice for now, really important for the future. My Ravishing Partner is building relationships with a couple of local organic farms and dairies to get ongoing deals for the food we use at the various camps and events we put on during the year, and while I plan to put in some more raised beds for more veggies this year, we're not farmers, and it doesn't make sense right now for us to try to be farmers, but I sure like knowing from where (and who) our food is coming.

And this is the second week all of us in the house have been carpooling into work together, out of necessity after a series of events temporarily left us with only one working car in the household. And, y'know, it's been a blast, and a great way to start and end the day, hanging out joking and laughing together. Even once we're back to a multi-car household, I can see keeping this up, at least some of the time. Having to rearrange our schedules to fit one car, instead of two or three makes me realize we can make it work, just takes a little more time, and a little more daily coordination. It was easy not to, before, but the excuse to have to work this out for a couple of weeks has been a real blessing (even if the individual car humbugs haven't seemed so at the time)

YAY to CSA's and carpooling!

I have to ask for details about the infused maple syrup...'cause I'm drooling thinking of the possibilities. So what were the syrups infused with...inquiring minds want to know!
