It certainly made me see the ukulele in a different light...

Wow -- thanks!

The ukulele is a traditional instrument in Hawaii (brought over by the Portuguese "paniolos" -- cowboys - who originally came over to help with herding), and so I've occasionally seen some virtuoso playing, usually in a traditional Hawaiian music context, but this fellow is GOOD. Nice style.

Ahhh...now this makes me remember how new we are to each other. Tell me again...what is your relationship to Hawaii?

Well, aside from some time spent in a few places in Arizona, and a bit in the Chicago area (where I was born), I spent most of my growing up years in one part or another of Hawaii -- a year when an infant, and then again from 3rd grade through the end of high school. And that's where C and I met as well, and then we both ended up going to college in Pennsylvania, a couple of hours apart (totally "coincidentally," we'll already applied to college before we first met)

Wow...I cannot imagine living somewhere like Hawaii. Part of me thinks it would be so stunning and that I would like to live in such harmony with the sea. Still, I don't know that I could be happy in a tropical locale...I just love the defined seasons too much.

So are you and Claudia high-school sweethearts?

And how the heck did you go from sultry Hawaii to cold-assed New England?

Yes, exactly -- Hawaii is gorgeous, and the land is so new, raw, so alive, with a living and very present pantheon and unbroken religious practice, and it was a great place to grow up, and swim and surf and scuba dive and hike and all kinds of other good stuff, and....yes, I need the 4 seasons. Where I am now is right for me. Which is not to say that if I won the lottery, I wouldn't buy a vacation beach house in Hawaii, of course!

C and I met about 1/2 way through our senior year in HS, through a play I was in that she was stage manager for. What's funny is that we'd both been at the same school since 3rd grade, and had never met (that we remembered) in all that time, though we had some friends in common. It's weird...but we met when it was the right time to meet, I figure.

Every move so far has been north and east from Hawaii, more or less. I plan to stay where I am now until they stick me in the ground, but if we ever do move again, to continue the trend it would have to be Nova Scotia or Iceland or something!

Weird coincidence #88 - My partner and I met during a play (he was in it and I was dressing it)...in fact it was 1776, and it was my senior year (of college).

What show brought you and C together?

They just keep coming, don't they? ::boggles::

That play was a student-written variety show that the senior class does as a part of the school's yearly multi-day carnival (a big deal on the island -- a real full-scale carnival, with rides, food, entertainment, etc). After not doing much theatre or singing, etc, for the two years previous, my senior year I turned my life back around 100% and dove back into theatre, music, writing, art...was in several productions that Spring (my favorite, I have to admit, was Ten Little Indians...light-weight, to be sure, but a total hoot). C had been heavily involved in theatre for years, had her union card, did lighting, sets, stage management, etc for some of the local theatre companies. Her BF at the time was an older guy also involved in the backstage side of local theatre.

Our first date was out to see a community theatre production of Vanities -- I still have the ticket stubs around the house, in fact...

Nice! I finally gave in to T (who was very persistent despite my not wanting to date him because he was such a rogue) when we were cast in a production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses together.

Sharing stage talk with you makes me think of the theatre restorative you all are offering this fall...but I'm not sure I'll be able to join you (though I'm really wanting to). A lot will depend on my life and the date you end up settling on.

We'll just have to see if it is fated...;>)

Hmm, talk about an omen! ;>

The workshop will be either Oct 9-12 or 16-19 (leaning towards the earlier date), the most beautiful time of the year out here. I *very* much hope you can make it, I'm thinking it would be just about perfect...

Your are cruel, taunting me good company, great art and Titian foliage. Truly I would like to be there, but it may not be meant to be.

I have a dear friend whose wedding is Oct. 10th (here in Chicago) and I have promised to be with her. You know, joyful obligation and all that. I'll keep my eyes out for notices and perhaps the dates will work themselves out in some way. If not, I'll just have to catch this type of thing when you do it again (hint, hint).

Well, it could still be on the weekend of 16-19, and that's the preference of one of the teachers, so.... (it won't be as pretty, peak leaf season is usually 1st two weeks in Oct), but the late leaves will still be on)

I'll let you know when a date gets picked...

Thank you...I appreciate it. If it works out, it sounds like work that I would LOVE! I wish I could experience your peak leaves...but I can't really miss my friend's wedding. "The Big Day" and all that.
