Another reason I'm proud of my state: Abortion parental-notice law repealed

Not so much liberal (though getting moreso), but libertarian, fiercely protective of individual freedoms and privacy. I can live with that.

Speaking of enjoying my state, today my partner Claudia and my son and I are going to head out to begin the first multi-day backpacking trip my son's ever done. We're starting with a spectacular one, but planned so that the pace should keep it fun and not a grueling ordeal. I want my son to love this stuff!

So we'll be driving up to the White Mountains today, perhaps doing a day hike enroute, and staying at the Joe Dodge lodge at Pinkham Notch. Tomorrow morning we're up early, catch a hiker's shuttle to the trailhead that leads to the Cog Train, which we will take up to the top of Mount Washington (also info from the observatory here). We'll have lunch at the top and then perhaps a side-hike along some alpine meadows (which should be in bloom), and then a couple of miles down to our destination, the Lakes of the Clouds hut. The AMC huts are pretty green/low-impact: solar, composting toilets, etc, and I always like checking out how they do things.

The next day is the longest day of hiking, down the spine of the southern Presidential peaks -- Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce, and so on, most above 5000 ft, and to Mizpah Spring hut. We'll spend the night there, hopefully with some good star-gazing, and then the next day head down the switchbacks and across a few "minor" Presidentials, and end up at the Highland Center at Crawford Notch, where we'll be grateful for showers and a room to ourselves (we've got a 4-person room, and they generously told us we could fill it with just the three of us). On the 4th, depending on how we feel, maybe a day-hike up Mt. Avalon or another shorter hike, then back home to barbeque and blow things up with a house-full of good friends and family.

I hope this is just the first of many good outdoor adventures with my son, and I'm very glad he's old enough that we can all enjoy this kind of thing together. See you all next week (pictures to follow)!

The Cog, like all steam engines, isn't very green; but it is elemental as all hell and even organic in its own way. I have been fascinated by the Cog since my first trip up (around 1965) and am so glad that it continues to survive as a unique piece of living history. I try to make a trip up every summer to do my part to keep it going, missed last year but will definitely go this year.

Have a great trip and see you on the 4th!

Sounds like an excellent itinerary - and I can't wait to see the pics!

See you on Wednesday for barbequed bangers, booze and booms!
