Well, last night the collected adult population of Casa Chaos gathered together and watched the final two episodes of season 2 (the final season before the show was cancelled) of Carnivale.

Three things:

1. By the gods, that's some incredibly, damnably good storytelling -- simply wonderful, in that dreadfully compelling, "oh I can't stand to watch and see this get worse and worse and I know it's just not going to go well but I can't stop now because I have to see what happens next" kind of way. Those bastards.

2. Cudos to HBO for having the incredible guts to film and air two full seasons of a show which is in so many ways a complete antithesis of normal broadcast TV fare, and so far out on the edge. And big huge wet raspberries to HBO for cancelling the show and leaving us with an eternal cliff-hanger of monumental proportions. Those bastards.

3. For an angst-antidote, we will all be having a Casa pizza night tonight and watching "Cars" with my beamish boy, and then on Friday the adults will descend on the cinema-drafthouse to see the next Pirates movie. After the last one, I don't expect much in the way of storytelling, but it will almost certainly be frothy, CGI-laden fun, and there is the eye-candy value.

Well, we haven't yet watched beyond the pilot those episodes of Hex that you gifted me with, but I remember you telling me to beware that there's a similar forever-unresolved second-season cliffhanger. Those bastards ;>

Pirates 2 was (in my opinion) less storytelling and less coherent than 1, more a series of visually-interesting vignettes, moments, and special effects. And even the first one I thought was, well, a Disneyland ride of a movie. Or rather, for a movie based on a theme park ride, it fulfilled my expectations. But hey, there's a place for light, frothy, eye-candy fun, for sure!

yes. hex is great, both seasons and it ends on a terrible cliff-hanger - currently no plans to resolve it, or produce more. it sucks....

*sigh* That's one of the reasons I held off watching it, but now that we've put ourselves through Carnivale, perhaps we're adequately toughened up for the inevitable crushing disappointment of the final cliff-hanger... ;>

Mm - last night's finale was like a rollercoaster that your friend has told you is big and scary and at the end it crashes but you're not allowed to get off...(*headdesk...sobbing*)...but you get on it anyway and your friend was RIGHT...oh ye gods!

Ahem.

I'm hoping Paul's homemade pizza will provide the closeure and healing that I crave. Actually, I know that'll help.

I think you and Claudia are going to enjoy the cinema pub - hey, if the movie sucks we'll have Guinness, at the very least... ;>

Guinness makes everything better. Speaking of which, should I pick some up on the way home? Angelica needs some empties as props for the show, right? Seems to me we should do our part...

Yes, I said. Yes, you will.

Yes.

(what a silly question)

Yeah, I guess that's roughly equivalent to, "so should I breathe on the way home?"

I'd prefer it if you'd breathe *and* pick up Guinness...c'mon Chel, I know you can multitask! ;P

Well, between the two, better stick with the breathing, but I shall try to work my edges and do both...

Yes, he said. Yes, I shall. Yes.

Who's the eye candy for you? Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp, or both?

LOL

Why choose?! After all, a pirate's a pirate's a pirate......in a dress or in trousers or.....dreadlocks or.......Orlando Bloom's just too pretty for my taste, though.......never did have much taste for "pretty boys" -
My kids are hopelessly addicted to "Cars" and to be honest, I don't mind that much - there's a good lesson or four in that movie......just saw Shrek 194 and it wasn't as horrible as the reviews made out - after all, how bad can a movie really suck if Snow White can sing "The Immigrant Song"?! Really!!!

Ha! That alone may be worth going to see it!

And now that I've seen it, agreed about "Cars." Pixar rocks. And a really sweet movie, and a truly good message. Two thumbs up.

Absolutely! My kids are completely hooked and though I didn't want to see it at first, now I've no complaints when they do pull "Cars" out - Pixar's got a new one though - Ratattoille......looks entirely too funny - a rat who wants to be a chef in Paris......mais oui......du fromage!
Giggled through the previews of that one......
As for the rest, Snow White and the rest of her fuzzy creatures singing "The Immigrant Song" did segway into a "Heart" song, but still.....it was well worth it - and had the entire audience (made up that day of all Cirque employees and their families) cheering for more and singing along LOL
