A wee list
Apr. 18th, 2007 06:42 pmSnow snow snow rain rain rain rain rain.

The Nor'easter over the weekend really slammed us up here -- our land and house are fine, but there's a lot of trees down and flooding in the surrounding area, we've been without power since Sunday, so I wasn't much online. I am grateful for a well-stocked larder, wood heat, kerosene lamps and a wee generator for necessities (with a hand-pump well in the barn if all else fails), but this all pushes me to step up the plans for the solar and
microhydro system...
Power is back on as of tonight, which is especially good, since 25 or so people will be showing up tomorrow for the Arts Restorative. We could have done it without power, but really, so much more convenient with lights and such.
Things I did in the last month or so:
- Turned 40. Bizarre, but nice to have made it this far.
- Left the wonderful world of freelance writing to become the Director of Internet Strategy at one of the top U.S. non-profit hospitals -- a job which pays several times what I was earning, actually expects (only) 40 hours a week, is a good challenge but very, very stable, gives me 34 days of paid vacation a year(!), a retirement plan, and a damn good healthcare plan. Plus I get to go over and have lunch with my Ravishing Partner who also works there at least once or twice a week, which is a lovely bonus. And still, there's a part of me that feels a bit disappointed that working for someone else turned out to be such a better alternative than I could create by working for myself. If, however, as I suspect, I will end up having much more time and energy to do my own writing work this way, as well as stepping up my plans for house and land, all will be well.
- helped my in-laws move nearby. Now, within 4 years of moving up the Great White Nawth, all four parental units live within easy driving distance, three of them within 20 min. I have no illusions - it's all about #1 grandson, but, also, there's a great relief that when health problems arise, we'll be nearby to help. My Ravishing Partner and I have been very lucky, but I think all four of our parents, in their early to late-70s, made their moves up here knowing it would likely be their last big move.
- saw Tracy Grammer perform at Middle Earth Music Hall. Amazing.
- got sand between my toes and got to play in tidepools. I keep forgetting that's only a coupleof hours away. Will hopefully get to do it again (and/or wander in the mountains) next weekend with lovely housemates and delightful houseguest.
- held my partner for 6 1/2 hours in our dining room while while she got an amazing back tat. Yes, all in one sitting. It's a Time thing.
- found out that my partner had more cancer, than found out that she didn't. Apparently, getting a magickal tat cures cancer. Who knew? This one took up most of my emotional energy for a good while. I'm still exhaling slowly, and with gratitude.
- got to celebrate the 30th, 40th and 50th birthdays, respectively, of three lovely friends in the D.C. area. Together they rented out a hall and held a masked ball, so we all got to be as fey as we wanted to. Saw some of you there (yay)
- Hosted the final Feri class here. I will very, very much miss the excuse to get regular hang-out time with
yezida, and a number of the people in the class were or have become dear friends. And, it's also a bit of a relief to have more free weekends this coming summer when we're not hosting events and dealing with a house full of people.
- and oh, so much more, but that's plenty of talkin' for now.
