chelidonWet Tech (full lighting and sound, etc) for Winter Revels went very well last night, but not so well that I'm nervous. Among a few other small things, my duet partner for Cherry Tree Carol blew a couple of words, and we'd so closely connected energetically for precise pitch matching that he pulled me along with him, and Mary did something to Joseph, but we're not quite sure what. On the other hand, it was barely noticible, the rest of the piece was spot-on, and I think the intonation and pitch matching were about as as good as we've done yet. One solo singer lost an entire verse of a song he must have sung a thousand times before, and some of the other singers had to jump in and fill in for him until the next chorus. Whoops, but superstition and experience lead me to worry if tech and dress rehearsals go too well -- better to make the flubs during tech than relax too much and, say, blow opening night.
Got back home a little earlier than the night before, but still close to midnight, and then fell asleep in my office chair while trying to finish a 1000-word piece I need to get in today. Ow. So my neck and shoulders are sore, but what I'm more concerned about is hip pain, pretty intense. It came on suddenly but with no obvious cause a week or so ago, and seems to be worst first thing in the morning, and then again in the evening as the day wears on. And this is an active show, even though, thankfully, I opted out of all but one of the big dance pieces (and that one's a Shaker dance, not clogging, so pretty gentle stuff). One of the PTs at the hospital who my partner mentioned this to says it sounds like sciatica (pinched nerve, basically), which makes sense, and it should get better on its own, but whatever the cause, the pain and stiffness are, well, a real pain. I think lots of hikes after the show run is finished should help, not to mention catching up on rest.
And it looks like we're definitely going into the studio in January to record some of the songs in the show for a CD to be released sometime this coming year, which is nifty. I have to say, I'm a lot fonder of the music in this show than in many of the other musical recordings I've been a part of, especially some of the more modern choral works -- the shape note pieces and Appalachian folk tunes are a lot closer to the music of my heart.
Tonight we have the dress rehearsal, and they donate a limited number of tickets to local hospice organizations, veteran groups, schools and so on, so we should have something like a half-full house, maybe 400-500 people. Having an audience always juices up the performance. Then tomorrow is opening night, whee! After strike and cast party Sunday night I can relax, and start catching up on sleep and family time, along with house projects, celebrating Yule, hosting my in-laws for a few weeks, putting together a Casa Chaos New Year's party, and getting things set up for the next Feri class. Still, by comparison, it will seem like a long leisurely expanse of time...I'm looking forward to it.
