From an excellent letter pointed to by a post from
phryday (full post here):
The greatest honor that any American can pay to any veteran is to exercise the liberties guaranteed to you by the Constitution.
So true.

Some in military service have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives, but it is another true thing that every single veteran, alive or dead, has preserved our right to question authority by sacrificing, for a time, their own right to do the same. Military service people live every hour of every day knowing that at any moment, they can be ordered to take actions which would put their lives at risk, or with which they may not agree, to kill, or be killed. It's worth thinking about, giving thanks, and exercising those rights that so many have given so much to preserve. Question authority, speak freely, assemble, march, agitate and protest, as your conscience calls you to do, remembering that many have given up their freedoms, and their lives, so that we could exercise and live ours. Never, ever, let anyone tell you that exercising the fundamental rights that America was founded upon is anything less than wholly and utterly patriotic.
