up for air
Oct. 9th, 2006 02:06 pmPopping up for air, again briefly...
Then off to pick up a new grate for the wood boiler (one of them warped and cracked, $90 for a new one, grrr, but no heat or hot water 'till I do), phone interviews and more research for a big freelance piece due in tomorrow, hanging out with an old friend and coven sister who's heading back home this evening, and rehearsal for Winter Revels (I am absolutely adoring the Appalachian music we're doing this year), maybe a quick pint afterwards with

In the meantime, a couple of pics from this morning:
Cat TV. I alternate between hard-nosed and soft-hearted. This morning I was a big mush-ball. This is the season when the mice start to invade the house, as the night-time temps dip towards freezing. So the cats are having a field(mouse) day. This morning I interrupted their extended game by dropping in the live-trap, which their intended prey immediately dove into for refuge. It's sitting on my desk now, and later I'll go release the mouse down by the stream, from where it will no doubt work its way back to the house soon enough. If there were a patron saint of lost causes and futile gestures, I'd have his medallion around my neck, at least on odd-numbered days ;> At least this way, I won't find a dead mouse in my shoe when I get home. Maybe in the morning, tho'.
A full spectrum of Fall colors. This is my very favorite time of year. And while the maples get the best press (and those sugar maples are spectacular), some of the birch trees head into winter slumber with a blaze of glory, too.
Yesterday I stacked a cord of wood, took out the tractor and backhoed a spot for an azalea bush that's needed replanting all season, and dug out a stump so I can cut it flush to the ground and plant edible mushrooms in it for next season. With all the health issues around here, I haven't gotten much tractor time, and okay, it's sooo stereotypical, but dang, heavy equipment is fun. Almost makes me look forward to snow plowing. Almost.

Date: 2006-10-09 03:27 pm (UTC)one mouse can travel a mile in 24 hours..... the island was only a mile long so I don't know across what distances a mouse can actually travel across.
