putting things in perspective
Sep. 21st, 2006 12:25 pmFollowing news today that this past summer was the first time in recorded history that the polar ice camp melted so severely that you could sail a ship right up to the North Pole, Britain's Royal Society. one of the most respected scientific organizations in the world, accused Exxon-Mobil of giving millions of dollars to groups that try to discount global warming. This little bit of short-sighted fun comes from the same company that gave us the Exxon Valdez disaster and then has used endless legal tactics for the last seventeen years since to avoid paying their fine for irrevocably damaging massive stretches of critical ocean, shore and wildlife habitat and killing countless animals.
So today, some good news: at the Clinton Global Initiative (why is it that our Democratic ex-presidents typically go on to do all kinds of great things after their terms are done, while the Republican ones generally just sit on their behinds and rot?), British business mogul Richard Branson pledged 3 billion dollars of his own fortune to combat global warming.
Impressive. And that's the cost of about 2 weeks of the war in Iraq. Think what we could be doing now, if our pathologically idiotic President hadn't gotten us stuck in that huge mess. And then do what you can to bring about regime change, right here at home.
