From my Lovely Housemate Paul. I am so loving these growing ripples of creative manifestation...especially the second post. "The Chicken Heard 'Round The World?" "Cluck Free or Die?" Hmm, needs work ;> Seriously, the kind of civil disobedience they're instigating can stir up a lot of trouble for the instigators. But it's necessary. If that wasn't the same day my son goes into the hospital for surgery, I'd be there.

It's about making connections between people, and doing the work, bit by bit. I need to get off my own ass and take a walk down the road to meet the family horse-farm neighbors who recently built an enormous new horse barn/arena, on which I notice they've put some lovely Celtic knotwork and Epona art. Something tells me we might get along.

We are currently planning to open a new Market/Cafe in Barre that will stock only local Vermont products and Farm Fresh products.
The business is called LACE (Local Agricultural Community Exchange). The idea is to provide a commons for farmers and the public to reconnect and
get to know one another.

Beyond making and selling Vermont foods, our kitchen will also serve as an incubator program, a classroom and a processing center. We aim to re-educate
ourselves and others on how to cook seasonally and how to preserve foods. We have our own truck (soon to be converted to SVO) so that we can do a lot of
deliveries without distributors bringing the products straight from the farms to our Market. Additionally, all the products will be displayed alongside photos and reading materials on the farms and producers.

The Cafe is set to open its doors in November, and the Market will open in Spring of 2007.

Thank you,
Ariel Zevon

On Friday, June 16th, the Mad River Valley Localvore Project and George Schenk of American Flatbread will be hosting The Chicken Event: A Public
Act of Civil Disobedience at American Flatbread Restaurant in Waitsfield, VT. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the challenges local
farmers face competing against giant factory farms. In a country where cheap food is considered a right, the local farmer raising and processing
animals in a humane and environmentally healthy way simply cannot compete.

Not only are the costs of raising food in this way higher for the local farmer, but regulations that govern how the meat must be processed and how
it can be sold makes it nearly impossible for local farmers operating on a relatively small scale to sell chicken to local restaurants or stores or
even at farmer's markets.

At the Chicken Event, American Flatbread will be offering a special chicken flatbread in the restaurant that evening. The chicken will be from local
farmer and neighbor Hadley Gaylord. The Gaylord Farm is across the street and within a half mile of the restaurant. The chickens from the Gaylord
Farm have been raised by the Gaylord family and processed on the farm by Hadley Gaylord. State and Federal regulations prohibit American Flatbread
from serving this chicken. But on June 16th diners will have an opportunity to prove that consumers are capable of making informed, rational, and
responsible decisions for themselves, without the government making it for them when they order this special flatbread.

Doug Flack of Flack Family Farms and outspoken supporter of the 2006 Vermont Farmer Protection Act that was recently vetoed by
Governor Jim Douglas will speak at 7:30pm at the Lareau Farm, home of American Flatbread. The movie Sweet Soil (20 minutes) will be shown at
5:30pm and 9:00pm and Fed Up! (60 minutes) will be shown at 6:00pm. Both films are documentaries highlighting the importance of local family farms
and the impact that factory farming, genetically modified foods, and giant agribusinesses have on our food system. Educational materials will be provided to
help attendees understand the current meat processing regulations and the challenges facing local farmers. In addition, information on the history
and purpose of acts of civil disobedience will be highlighted. These events are free and participants do no need to eat in the restaurant to attend the talk or
movies. Key state officials including Secretary of Agriculture for the state of Vermont, Steve Kerr, will receive personal invitations from George
Schenk to attend the event.

American Flatbread is located on Route 100 in Waitsfield, VT. For more information on the event, go to www.VermontLocalvore.org.
