After something like 36 hours of marathon writing and editing, I feel a bit like I've given birth. But to extend the metaphor perhaps a bit too far, if it had gone on even a little while longer, my editor may well have shown up dressed in scrubs and cut it right out of my side. Unlike a modern Caesarian Section, however, the editor would not have likely used any anaesthetic or bothered to sew me back up again afterwards ;> A few intervals of that pernicious ol' writer's block made this one more stressful than it would otherwise have been, but that's an occupational hazard, and well, it got done, and that's what counts.
And hey, it's a cover piece for a big international magazine, and better per-word rates than I've seen in a few years helps make it worth the grief. Now onto another big piece for an educator's magazine, due Monday morning. Then something of a break for at least a couple of weeks (other than the usual recurring work), a chance to rest and recharge, teach a Rites of Passage class with my ravishing partner, visit some friends, and finish a few of many house projects in hiatus, including installing the hall bathroom glass basin sink, and perhaps getting started on the kitchen island, the frame of which I'm thinking of building in traditional post-and-beam style, both so it fits with the house, and to get smaller-scale practice for building some post-and-beam structures on the land over the next couple of years. Pics to follow at some point.
Now a brief walk down to the stream to reset my body and souls, and on the way, scatter some wood ash for traction on the bits of the road that got all icy during this past week's heavy rain and Springlike weather.
