I got a complete set of topo maps in today from USGS for the region where I live. I am definitely a map geek, topo maps especially. Perhaps from having used them a lot in the past, they really give me a good sense for the feel of a place.

And then I tried out Google Earth. This takes map geekery to a whole new level. Mac or PC, if you've got a fairly recent computer, download the client and try it out, it's free. I guarantee you will waste a lot of time playing with this. Wow.

I got a glimpse of google earth, then it bombed on loading. My desire for google earth is what had started me saving for a new computer because mine is just not fast enough for Google Earth. Prior to viewing Google Earth, I never dreeamed I would want to spend $1,000+ to upgrade for a freeware program.

heh. Maybe Google is getting kickbacks from the computer manufacturers.. ;> I'm just running a 1Ghz machine, but it's a G4 Mac, and handles it fine.

ooh, yeah -- running Windows on a 500 Mhz box, I can see why it would choke. Have you tried Freecycle.org? They don't have many computers offered around here, I notice, but maybe it's different in your area...
