hither and yon
Dec. 19th, 2005 03:55 pmI'm sitting in the airport in Las Vegas, my connecting flight delayed, really wishing I was just heading right back home again. Travel used to be more fun, I seem to remember, but I'm just becoming more and more of a home/land-body these days. I already miss my partner, son and housemates, and I can't wait to be back home. But...it's a short trip, and I couldn't turn down a pair of cover pieces, especially because it's on the same topic as another freelance piece I was contacted last week to write in the next few weeks, so I can work on both pieces at once, always a good thing to be able to arrange.
But this does cap a crazy couple of weeks, with the Winter Revels show run finishing up last night, then strike and a big strike party afterwards (we filled the Canoe Club with deliciously harmonized, and loud, Georgian songs, I felt a bit bad for any of the patrons there who weren't part of our big raucous band), all of which got Kelly, Angelica and myself home well after 2am (*again*, the cast party Saturday night went on at least as long), then I was up in the wee hours today to plow the road, bring some wood down from the paddock with the tractor, quickly pack, and make my morning flight out. Oh, and of course, just as I head out to the car, the guys show up with the heavy equipment to start excavating and pouring the foundation for the house expansion. Oi.
Sleep has been a sometime thing lately, but it was a great week, and a great show -- standing ovations, sold-out houses, and some of the best, most powerful, and most fun, stage and choral work I've ever done. It really was a totally extraordinary show. There's been some banter, not sure how serious yet, of taking it on the road to Europe. We'll see. I think a studio recording is likely. And I can't wait to get the DVD, hopefully by our cast reunion party in a few weeks.
The Revels cast was hands-down the most close-knit, fun, and passionate bunch of creative performers and backstage folks I've been a part of. It really is a kind of family, wiith some folks having been in the company for 20+ years -- I feel very lucky to have been a part of the production and the process, and I am definitely in post-show longing for everyone with whom I became so close, throughout some very, very hard work, which in the end turned into an completely amazing show. And I think the three of us from the house are firmly a part of the crew, we're all hooked, and were all really enthusiastically welcomed into the company. One couple I've gotten to hang out with told Kelly and I last night that we "got the award for best new additions to the company," and that kind of sweet comment happened again and again all during these past week weeks. On my part I've never come into a new group of performers where I felt so warmly and openly welcomed, so much a part of the group. And most miraculous of all for performers, *no big egos*, no primadonnas, no self-centered people who drove me or the directors crazy or for whom it had to be all about them. Wow. The directors are all immensely talented, and easy to work with (though very demanding, which I'm fine with). They are a fun, wacky bunch, with enormous talent and passion for their art, and my heart is so glad to have worked and played with them. We'll definitely be hanging with one another in between shows, and I'm seriously looking forward to that. More here from my fellow cast member and Lovely Housemate

I had forgotten how much I enjoy stage work, and being a part of a really good production, with really dedicated people. Yum!
