As a followup to this post a while back, this gives me some hope that we haven't yet gotten to the absolute bottom of the barrel: What was ABC thinking? (subhed: Yanked 'Neighborhood' catches it from all sides) Who thought that was a good idea?

I had the lovely opportunity this past weekend to steal away a wee bit of time with dear old comrade [livejournal.com profile] yezida (dahling, we simply must do that again soon...), and on the drive home from the airport, I thought of a question which was indirectly instigated by our conversations. It's interesting to me, and I'd be curious to hear what any of you think about it. What is the difference between passion and intensity?

Speaking of passion, today I will be indulging my passions for spending time with loved ones and treasured friends (including [livejournal.com profile] draiguisge) and a couple of old, old friends who have just moved into the area (one of whom was my very first housemate back in '86), cooking up mass quantities of yummy food on the grill, drinking good wine (State stores here have a July 4th sale, 20% off mixed cases of American wine), and, of course, blowing things up in an orgiastic celebration of pyrotechnic excess. Am going to stick with more low-elevation displays than high fliers this year, I'm a bit concerned about the potential of having to climb up on the barn roof and put out a fire.. ;> It is, no kidding, the most perfect day of the year -- currently 73 degrees, clear blue sky and sunny. And though I'll probably go out and do a little bit of work on the land, there's absolutely nothing that I *have* to do, and the 25 people who were here on the land over the weekend, though wonderful folks, are now back home, and the house is quiet again (or as quiet as it gets with a five-year-old who just got himself a tank full of hermit crabs) Bliss.

More bliss: Lovely Housemate Paul just came up the stairs to show me that he'd heard my bitch yesterday that with 2 million kinds of weird-ass tea in the house, we somehow managed to be completely out of Earl Grey (whine, bitch, moan, kvetch ;>), and he picked some up while shopping yesterday. Life is good.

What is the difference between passion and intensity?

That's a good question.

In myself, passion is always mindful. However I can have intensity while being unmindful, or even off kilter.

Intensity can be wonderful in the moment, but needs to come to rest. It is not sustainable as a normal state of being for me.

Passion need not run with intensity, but can. It can also run like a slow thrumming under the rest of my life. Passion can be intense, however it can also be calm, abiding, sustainable. My passion can inform my Will, and can lead me to build a better life. My passion can spring wells from which I can drink deeply.

All that said - at my worst, I get passion and intensity confused. That's my dark Leo superpower, and I'm working on it. ;-)

What is the difference between passion and intensity?
For me, intensity it what makes things move, happen change... the power, the force behind a thing. Passion is the stuff underneath - the motivation, the drive, the stirring that gives intensity its fire. Whereas passion can burn and spark and fizzle, it doesn't necessarily effect change. But intensity... intensity cannot help but do so.

Q. Who thought that was a good idea?
A. People with no grounding in the real world.

We finally discovered that they were filming in a subdivision called Circle C which my wife likes to call the "christian white republican" neighborhood. They have rules like you can't keep your garage door up except for utilitarian purposes, HOA folks actually walk around and measure the grass, trash cans must be brought back from the curve before 6pm (they might have changed that to 8pm), etc. ABC probably must've known this since it probably is the most conservative HOA in Austin (technically, I wounldn't call this Austin since it's at the very southwest corner of city).

Older site of the place. Notice how many minorities are shown in the flash.

I wouldn't have minded seeing this just to show just how assholish folks who live there are. one of e's co-workers was asking about the minority make-up of our neighboorhood since we love it however, they decided they'd rather pay bigger bucks and live in Circle C instead of having 1 hispanic, 2 black, and 1 ex-con pot-smoking neighbor. I like my neighbors, we're all civil libertarians.
