weekend memories
Jun. 20th, 2005 01:54 amOn Friday night, Robert Plant was, as always, fabulous. He is still taking exquisite care of his voice, can still nail his tunes, and he still puts on an amazing show. I hope I am even in half as good a shape as he is when I'm his age, and am still being as creative and innovative as he is now.
It was so very nice to get the chance to have a purely fun evening with my partner-- no household business, no teaching or organizing discussions, no parenting, nothing but enjoyment and hanging out and having purely pleasurable time together. I was reminded of our first date, 20 years and almost 5 months ago, when I quickly discovered how cool she was by the fact that she knew all the words to the Led Zep songs I played on my little boombox in the back of the car (a serious rustbucket beach car with no cassette player of its own). I am reminded of how cool my partner is today by the fact that she still knows all the words to all the Led Zep songs, a surprising number of which Robert sang on Friday. And we got to critique the lighting setup together, and the sound system, and the various surprisingly well-run aspects of the venue -- we first met through doing theatre work together (she was far more serious about it than I), and we still geek about those things.
And on the way there and back, I was reminded of two things. First, I'm glad we're two hours from Boston, which means we can go to these kinds of events when we want to. And second, I am so glad we're two hours from Boston. I have gotten totally unused to city traffic, and insane drivers careening all over the place. I still have the necessary killer instincts, can still do the dance, but it seems so...unnecessary now that I don't have to do it regularly anymore. Boston is a fine city, with many things to recommend it, and...cities just kind of creep me out anymore. And I don't miss the insane, road-raged assholes on the city roads. I had a guy on I-93 about 15 minutes from Boston pass us on the right, and slow down just to flip us off, and then do it again just to make sure we saw it, before he cut across several lanes of traffic and exited, almost causing several accidents on the way. It had nothing to do with traffic -- I can only assume it had to do with the pro-Kerry bumper stickers my partner has on her car (ex: "John Kerry: Bringing complete sentences back to the White House.") Whatever.
Saturday's Summer Solstice Revels in a town about 20 min from us was the perfect antidote to the city madness. My Lovely Housemate
lylythe_strega was in the chorus, and a bunch of us, including dear old friend
orca_girl soaked in what was a delightful community festival and celebration of midsummer, including a number of choruses, Morris and Contra Dancers, pipers and musicians, elemental invocations, dance, arts, crafts and children's activities out the wazoo, blacksmiths, clay oven baking, and other demonstrations, fantastic food, jugglers, incredible puppeteers, storytellers, and too many other fun happenings to describe. And it was all free (except for the food). All very, very pagan, in the old English/New England/Irish/Scottish village folk tradition. It was like being an extra in the filming of the Wicker Man movie, all day and into the night. Pure delight, and it fed my soul that this wasn't so much a performance as a number of local towns and villages and families choosing to get together to do this for 30 years now. I'll upload some pictures some time during the next couple of days.
Hanging out with
orca_girl Saturday and today was pure pleasure, after years of not seeing one another catching up on news of old friends and our lives, loves and happenings, showing off our land (and bumper crop of mosquitos after all the recent rain ;>), sitting in front of a cheery fire in the hearth into the wee hours and laughing until my stomach hurt, drinking too much mead, remembering old times and plotting new ones, making nebulous plans to go kayaking and exploring the White Mountains and hang out in Boston, then more delicious time into the even wee-er hours with Lovely Housemates, as the fire smolders and crackles in the hearth.
And today was Father's Day -- my father came to visit, and my partner and housemates and son made it a real evening to remember, of wonderful food, wine, laughter and memories.
It really does not get much better than this.
