I just received via FedEx a new iMac and Macbook, and soon to arrive, cream of the crop, one of the new Macbook Air laptops.

Okay, I only get to keep them for a couple of weeks (for a review, always was a sucker for an editor calling with a sob story, especially if they're willing to go $1/word), but still, just sayin'. Whee!

The new toy I do get to keep is a Zoom H2, to record chants and such at camps, and also set up a good and easily portable semi-pro level recording capacity for the upcoming Musical/Magickal Arts Restorative event here at the end of April. Like last year, I plan to send everyone home with a CD of their work and the group work. Some of the improvs last year were most definitely ready for prime time, and I only wished I had a better portable recording solution to capture them more accurately. So here it is. No, it doesn't take 1/4" XLR inputs, but for a pure portable it can't be beat unless you spend a lot more money.

Please do post the info for the Musical/Magickal Arts Restorative as well! I'm hoping to be there, but I can't say for sure until I request (and receive) approval for the time off.

Sure thing, been buried in Feri for a few -- we're just finalizing the announcement draft now, but I'll post what we've got now and make any tweaks later -- all the basic info is complete.

Please let me know how the Zoom works out! (and how much it costs... the site didn't say). I want and actually need something like it.

Will do -- I paid $199 including shipping, which is a fraction of what I've seen similar competing products go for (though some of them have bells and whistles the Zoom doesn't have and no doubt somewhat higher quality). It records on standard SD and SDHC cards so you can swap out cards on the fly and have essentially unlimited recording time. The cards can either be plugged into a USB adapter attached to your laptop (mine cost about $10), or the whole recorder including card be plugged in directly via USB cable and it'll appear as an external drive to the laptop.

The reviews I saw were all very good (one of the more thorough is here: http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/2007/09/13/review-zoom-h2-surround-recorder.html) and it's very portable and can run on rechargable AAs, as well as AC adapter, one of my requirements.

Check out page 2 of the review with the pic of the windscreen adapter -- Lylythe saw it like that and threatened to put googly-eyes on it.
