The sacred power of fermentation is one of the greatest natural gifts through which we work transformative magic along with our green allies from the world of living, growing things. From the earliest times of humans on the Earth, we have gathered the bountiful harvest of grains, fruits, and honey, and by transforming them through the art, science and magic of fermentation, have created sacred drinks which prevented the spread of water-borne diseases, could be stored and transported safely, were a source of nutrition into the cold dark winter months, and were used as a gateway into the sacred realms and communion with the divine. Virtually every culture throughout time has venerated fermentation as a sacred art and craft, and a holy, blessed gift from the gods.

At the time of Lammas harvest, join Don and Chelidon in a one-day workshop in which we honor the God/desses of grain, beer, mead, and fermentation as we work with the sacred and magical art of brewing beer and mead. This is a hands-on workshop in which we will learn to create ritual ale, mead, wine, and other ritually charged and crafted sacraments (time allowing, we may also include working with other "gifts of yeast," by creating ritual cakes / bread with Claudia Manifest).

On a hands-on, kitchen-witch level, we'll introduce participants to the process of brewing in your own home, the equipment you need, the ingredients that go into beer and mead, and how to follow brewing recipes. Along with charging and creating sacred witch's brews, participants will receive a handout with sources of brewing supplies, information, and a selection of some of the books available for home beer, mead, and winemakers.

There will also be space for discussion and dialogue about the historical and cultural use of fermentation, the distinction between inspiration and intoxication, the line between use and abuse, and the appropriate and responsible use of sacred intoxicants.

Together, we will will celebrate the abundant Lammas harvests of grains and fruit, charging our bountiful gifts from the earth for our own personal transformation and harvest. Then we will do the deep and creative magic of crafting ritual mead and beer, beginning the process of fermentation in sacred space. Each participant will have an opportunity to return at a later date for bottling, and (whether or not they can participate in the bottling) can receive a portion of the beer and mead for their own sacred and ritual use in the coming year. We will have a few samples of home-brewed beers and mead at the workshop, to give you a taste of what can be done in your own home.

This event is clearly not alcohol-free, so please use your best judgment if you wish to attend, and all participants must be over 21. We will also be working with things that are hot and heavy, so for safety reasons, it's not a good place to bring children or pets. Please contact the registration email address above with any questions or for more information and to request a registration form. We look forward to seeing you there!

Chelidon is a devotee of the bardic and creative arts, including the skills of word, rhythm, story and song. His other loves include history and mythology, herbalism and alchemy, and art crafted with wood, metal, stone, chocolate or pixels. Much of his inspiration comes from the ferocious, lascivious forces of nature, and he lives in the wild woods of New Hampshire with much-beloved family and friends, on deeply beautiful land they delight in sharing with others for workshops, classes and camps. He has been brewing mead, wine and beer as a sacred art for more than two decades.

Don is a long-time pagan who has become much more active in his practice in the last several years. His introduction to homebrewing came while studying microbiology in college, and has always felt that the process of fermentation is one of the great gifts of the God/desses to humans. He is passionate about good food, and is often astonished, pleased, and thankful for the ways in which bacteria and yeasts help to create wonderful flavors.
