I totally agree, it's half-assed, and... it's something, concrete progress, one step at a time and all that. That very argument happened here, too, and while some folks wanted to stay hard-line (and I agree that's where we need to go), straw polls indicated that we could win in part, or fight and lose on the whole enchilada. I will hope (and help/work to make it so) that not too long down the line, with thousands and thousands of state-recognized civil unions in place, someone sues and wins or the legislature takes it up and goes the rest of the way. It'll happen, but may take a bit more time.
I heard about it yesterday on NPR. Hooray! And yes, I agree that full-fledged gay marriage is the goal, every incremental victory will only serve to prove those against gay marriage that their arguments are false.
Down heah in Jawjah, I'm not seeing any of this on the horizon, so I gotta just celebrate the successes of others...
