I live in a town with an official Hog Reeve. I love New England, there's this delightful combination of respect for history along with people who take their quirkyness seriously. It reminds me of the appearance of the Headless Horseman last Halloween. Yum.

Yesterday was a marvelous day, starting with flushing a flock of wild turkeys when my son and I walked up to get his bus (amazing how fast such huge birds can fly). Later after work in the afternoon I spent a couple of hours of fantastic skiing at the local place two exits down the road, then after putting the tractor back in the barn I got a wild hair and did some twilight snowshoeing on the land and down the stream, and then had my first "night off" for myself in a while, relaxing (offline!), watching Rome, reading a bit and getting to sleep at a quite reasonable hour.

Recharging is so essential. And it's still a constant challenge for me, it is so easy to get heads-down and grim and stressed-out and focus on all the hard things, spinning on the wheel faster and faster 'till I'm too exhausted to do anything well. Fun, joy, beauty, nature, rest, all feed me, and are completely and totally necessary. And respect for oneself goes hand in hand with respect for the land, and the world at large.

So today I'm going to go skiing again in the afternoon, and maybe tomorrow, too. Last chance -- this weekend is a trip down to D.C. for a masked ball several old friends are hosting for their 30th, 40th and 50th birthdays, respectively, and when I get back, it's supposed to be back to Spring again here, and the snow will be going, if not gone. For now, though, I get to play in the snow, and I will.
