I've really been a serious hermit the last couple of months -- pretty much all of my limited spare time has gone into family and the house/land, and my writing work, which has been going very well lately, when I can focus. that is... (this is just hilarious and sooo perfect, eternal thanks to [livejournal.com profile] marys_daughter for the link, you made my day). I moved into my new office (still settling in, and the pics don't do it justice) over the course of the last several days -- it took several long nights just to sort through the accumulated debris and get all the office stuff and equipment moved downstairs, quite an undertaking, whew. There's still much finishing work to be done. As of Tuesday they've finished building our new "will last forever" standing seam metal roof and a third skylight over the stairwell (to replace the natural light from the window which now looks over my office and is filed with stained glass). Of course, it's not like the roofing guys cleaned up any of their mess, which means the area around the house has once again got rubble, roofing shingles, nails and so forth all over the place, along with the concrete and other construction debris left over from the room addition. I should have all of that cleared off before too long, tho'.

My Lovely Housemate got her shipment yesterday of wickedly good-smelling stuff from Lush, while I got my shipment from United Nuclear. Hers smells much better, but it's a toss-up as to which is more fun -- funky soaps, "Sex Bombs," "Happy Pills," shower jellies, assorted scents and other wicked good stuff, versus my pocket Geiger counter, niobium rare-earth magnets (finger-breakingly strong...), magra-view fluid (microscopic magnets permanently suspended in an oil carrier), some lab and bar glassware (just have to keep them separate from one another when mixing drinks...), Europium-based phosphorescent powder (mix it in with yer favorite nail polish, and you have powerfully glow-in-the-dark polish!), nichrome wire (for making igniters for fireworks shows, another one of my hobbies), and some other miscellaneous nifty stuff. Yes, I'm a tree-hugger, a poet and a bardic guy, but I'm also a mad scientist at heart -- it's just another kind of magic ;> One of these days, I'm going to get around to building that Tesla Coil.

I also got my Lee Valley shipment, all hardware and carpentry supplies -- take-down bed hardware for the window-seat that will turn into a guest-bed that I'm building at the other end of the house addition, and a series of new books, most having to do with my latest research topic: "From Log to Log House," "Building With Logs & Log Cabin Construction," a fairly rare copy of "The Open Timber Roofs of the Middle Ages" (diagrams of all English timber-frame construction, mostly medieval churches), "The Craft of Log Building," "Chain Saw and Crosscut Saw Training Course" (originally published by the USDA Forest Service, an excellent reference), and Jeff Miller's book on bed design and construction. Reading for pure pleasure includes Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy, Alan Furst's Night Soldiers, and Crashing The Gate: Netroots, Grassroots And The Rise of People-Powered Politics, published by our own local Chelsea Green Publishing Company, from whom I would happily buy one of every single book they publish if I could.

And today, the Mother's Day presents for my ravishing partner arrive in the mail-- some totally frivolous and lusciously fun clothes and such. Everyone deserves to know that their beauty is appreciated :>

I am thankful for all of the beauty surrounding my life, and right this moment, for the beauty of the brilliant scarlet Japanese Maple outside my window, which somewhat miraculously survived all of the excavation and construction which happened not 6 feet away, and despite having about half of it ripped off by various pieces of heavy machinery operated by ham-handed drivers. Life, and hope, surprises by surviving in the unlikeliest of places.

Lush.....good stuff!

Yes, it does seem to be a quite powerful addiction, from what I can see...

I'll pass along the recommendation, thanks! And I *love* the icon!

First I was going to comment thanking you heartily for that procratination thing which describes with alarming accuracy far too many of my days...
And then clicking on pics, we have the same printer! cool! (small things like that make me happy) I wish we had the same stained glass window too!
