...for the photo on the front page of my local paper today:

Dick Stride scratches under the beak of one of his favorite emus on Bobolink Valley Farm in Tunbridge yesterday. Stride started raising the birds about 10 years ago when he discovered the healing quality of their oils while recovering from open heart surgery.

Damn I love it here.

"Bobolink Valley Farm in Tunbridge"

:O :O :O Your area must have been settled by people from where Raven and I grew up! (Tunbridge Wells & Tonbridge - Tunbridge until the 1800s)

Heh. How cool is that? They don't call it "New England" for nothing... Tunbridge is the site of the yearly rather optimistically-named Tunbridge World's Fair (http://www.tunbridgefair.com/), the largest regional ag fair in the northeast (I think) and one with a long reputation since the 1800s for uncontrolled wild drunken rowdyness and general wicked behaviour (which is. of course, why we go ;>). Heck, our little burg of Grantham is in Lincolnshire, eh? I'm embarassed to admit, however, that I believe that your Grantham is the birthplace of Maggie Thatcher. Ewww. Let's hope we do a bit better on this side of the pond... (Bush, for example, comes from nowhere *near* here ;>)

Ah, I feel a bit better -- I note (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantham) that Grantham is also where Sir Isaac Newton was educated. Phew.

And let me just tell you how hard it is expressing oil from an emu...

You have to squeeze really hard! And that's assuming you manage to coax them into the press... ;>
